Wisdom Teeth

Understanding Wisdom Teeth

Most people develop up to four wisdom teeth, two in the upper jaw and two in the lower jaw, though some have fewer, or none at all. Wisdom teeth usually erupt in the late teens or early twenties. Because they’re the last to appear, they can sometimes cause oral health issues such as overcrowding, impaction, or infection.

During your consultation, our Heathmont dentist will take x-rays to determine the growth pattern of the wisdom teeth and assess which wisdom teeth will be functional and which ones need to be removed. Sometimes, a person may need all of the wisdom teeth extracted.

Why Wisdom Teeth Can Cause Problems

When there isn’t enough room in the jaw, wisdom teeth can become trapped or grow at an angle. This may cause:

  • Pain and swelling in the gums or jaw
  • Difficulty cleaning the back teeth
  • Food and bacteria trapped between teeth
  • Decay, gum infections, or abscesses
  • Pressure that pushes other teeth out of alignment
  • Cheek irritation or ulcers from sideways-leaning upper wisdom teeth

Since tooth roots are not fully developed when wisdom teeth are still developing or erupting, and as tooth extractions that occur before age 20 tend to have fewer complications, dentists generally recommend removing impacted or misaligned wisdom teeth in young adults.

Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?

Not always. Some wisdom teeth erupt normally and can stay healthy for life.

During your check-up, our Heathmont dentist will assess your X-rays to see if your wisdom teeth are positioned correctly and functioning well. If they’re impacted, misaligned, or causing pain, we may recommend removal to protect your other teeth.
